dual booting Windows and Ubuntu

While it isn't officially supported, we have many users who successfully run NewsBin under Linux with a Windows emulator (Wine is the most popular). This forum exists for you Linux guys to share your experience getting NewsBin running on Linux as well as report any strangeness that we may or may not be able to fix. DThor is the resident expert.

dual booting Windows and Ubuntu

Postby TaintedShirt » Sun Jan 10, 2010 3:37 pm

Hi folks,
been using Newsbin for a while now and am slowly being converted to Ubuntu. I am so happy to find that Newsbin will work in Ubuntu but I have a question for you guys.

Currently I have Newsbin installed in Vista 32bit, with data and downloads being together on a separate partition to Vista. Would it be possible to install Newsbin on either Ubuntu 32 or 64 bit and point it at the data store I already use? Is this more hassle than it's worth?

I know I am being lazy, I could just re-download all headers etc but that could take days as my net connection is not the best.

thanks for any info

You should be able to use the same data folder in each. You'll probably want two different NBI files though unless you force the "Drive letter" and path to be the same in Ubuntu. You'll probably have to hand edit the configuration file to point to the data folder in Ubuntu.

thanks Quade, good news. :D

Two nbi files would probably be easiest as I am still getting used to Linux.

Just to clear it up for myself I would have to alter this setting:

[Settings]
DataPath=I:\NewsBin\Data\

to give the correct drive letter.

Would I be right in thinking that if I forced the drive letter then whatever changes I made while in Ubuntu, like adding a new newsgroup would be reflected when I boot back to Vista?

If this works out then the only reason I'll be booting back to windows will be to game. :lol:

No, not unless you're using the same NBI file in both cases.
