Cn't add more than 2 items in a filter

Postby royal_poed » Sat Mar 22, 2003 1:16 pm

On the filter pages I am trying to enter 3 subject reject filters:

((Earl)|(tng)).*1(pint)*['.x]1[349]
((Earl)|(tng)).*1(pint)*['.x]2[4-6]
((Earl)|(tng)).*2(pint)*['.x]0[1-58]

But News bim will accept only 2 of the above at once. When you try to add a 3rd nothing happens. You click on the add button and it won;t add.

Whyis this?

It's a bug, thanks for finding it. We'll look into it.

Sorry for the late reply, missed this post for some reason.

I've got a similar problem, but in a different part of the filter dialogue. I'm trying to add the following types of filters in the 'Accept Filename Filter' box:

(foo.*bar)|(bar.*foo)
(feed.*fish)|(fish.*feed)

I add 2 or 3 and then I can't add any more. I can add some simple filters like "blue" or "green", but not the more complex ones. I need to add almost 30 of the complex type.

Is this the same bug or is there some trick to it?

I'm using NB 4.1 Build 4268

Looks like the same bug. There is a level of complexity where the regex parser we are using just gives up.

Any suggestions? Any plans for upgrading the parser?

How about if I combine the filters, so that instead of the following two lines:

(foo.*bar)|(bar.*foo)
(feed.*fish)|(fish.*feed)

I have one line:

(foo.*bar)|(bar.*foo)|(feed.*fish)|(fish.*feed)|. . .

Do you think that would allow me to have the same effect, but with one filter instead of multiple ones.

Or can I reference an external file that has the filters in it?

Here is an additional piece of information. I had an older version of NB loaded on another machine (Version 3.3).

I was able to load many filters of the type being discussed in this thread with no problem. Note that version 3.3 did not have filter profiles.

Does this make a difference? Did something else change in this area between Ver 3 and Ver 4?

Hope this helps

I think Quade installed a different regex engine between 3 and 4. I'll get it on the bug list and maybe we'll address it in version 5. Version 4 is done, we aren't touching it unless we really really have to.

OK. Thanks for the reply.

Have you got any timeframe for version 5? Looking through the MOTDs, I saw that version 3.3.2 was released Sept 30, 2001 and version 4 was released April 24, 2003. That's over 18 months. Is that the time frame for version 5 -- October, 2004?

IT should not be as bad as you indicated - the date of 24 April 2003 was for the 4.1 release - the original 4.0 release was generally available from July 15 2002 and there were very stable betas for some time before that.

We are all hoping that Quade will get out an early pre-alpha of NB5 in the next month or so. When it goes GR will, I guess, depend on how the beta program goes.

He keeps telling me a month. But he's been saying that for 3 months now

Now that 4.1 is out, it is more believable. Hopefully a pre-release to registered users (bare-bones linux version) will be available sometime in June.

Actually, that was 4.1 released in April. 4.0 was out last year- I know I was running 4.01 in July 2002. Release dates for betas aren't on the site anymore.
The last of the 2 series- 2/14/99
The last of the 3 series- 9/30/01
The last? of the 4 series- 4/24/03
So you can figure about two years before version 5 is abandoned for the 6 series- that's your 2004 date.
If you're waiting for a Final version 5: there were 28 betas and 6 pre-releases for version 4, so it'll probably take a while to release a Final 5.

Took too long on my research again, at least two replies there ahead of me- oh, well.

Was 4.0 released July 15th? So I got here just after the beta-testing. I thought it had been out a while before that.

Well according to the Release Notes it was (the current release notes cover most the 4.x series releases including betas). However the last few betas and release candidates leading up to that were very stable and many people were using them.

I was just on that page to write my reply- I didn't even think to check the date for the final 4.0- thanks.
