I would like to exclude files that:
end in
a four-digit number inside parens
followed by a period
followed by WMV

I've tried the following in my global filter, but it doesn't work:

\([0-9][0-9][0-9][0-9]\)\.WMV

Any suggestions?

That looks right to me. I tested it and it works here. Setting this as a global subject filter and having Enable Filters turned off, I see a bunch of posts with an "R" in the box to the left of the subject and a status of "Subject Filter". The subjects that match the filter are shown as Idle/New.

What version are you using? Where are you expecting the filter to be applied?

Yeah, it's GOT to be in the subject filter.

I guess I don't understand why it needs to go in the Subject instead of the Filename filter. Can you explain? I currently have it in a custom filter, which is applied to all my groups; shouldn't it work there?

Where is the Enable Filters switch?

Maybe you can point me to a URL that explains how filters work--the model I have in mind obviously isn't right.

Filename filter is not applied until AFTER the post is downloaded. Before the post is downloaded, all Newsbin knows about is the subject, it doesn't know the true filename until the post is downloaded. Usually people post the filename in the subject, that's why we say to use the Subject filter. Since spammers like to use a different filename than what is in the subject, like maybe a .exe file to get you to download something unknowingly, we provide a separate filename filter to allow you to catch that possibility.

So, NewsBin doesn't know the real filename until it queries for the first chunck of file data data? Wouldn't that argue for always making the first chunk-query tiny?

Based upon what you've said, I would expect my regex to work in the Filename filter--albeit at the expense of having to download a potentially unwanted multi-megabyte file.

Where is the Enable Filters switch you mentioned earlier?
