Newsbin prompt for passwords - new option?

Postby nbwul62 » Sat Feb 24, 2018 3:23 am

I think this has been asked/discussed before(?)
Found a thread titled: "NZBs with embedded passwords + "AutoPAR/UnRAR"
Didn't want to revive/steal that older thread.

Some downloads require a password at the start of the unrar-process.
If it is done manually, WinRAR will prompt for that password.
I believe, within NB, there is some kind of password list, but (sorry to say) personally I think it is a bit inconvenient.
The manual unrar is quicker then.

Is there no way to show a pop-up prompting to enter a password?
Enter password for file xyz :

Should more files require a password, then a 2nd, or 3rd pop-up.

In most cases passwords are saved in the clipboard history/clipboard manager.

Just a suggestion. No idea how complicated this may be though.

You know if you add the passwords to "RarPasswords.txt" before download, Newsbin should handle it automatically.

Adding a password popup during a manual unrar is a good idea. That's basically what the current password window can be used for too.

Thanks.
Okay, this password thing, I know about it.
Thing is that it requires a number of steps, create, add data, save in the right folder, whereas my idea was more like when NB encounters a file that needs a password, it would bring up a pop-up (same as with manual unpacking).
Creating a text file takes more 'effort' (admittedly being small) than manual unpacking.
Anyway, it was/is a suggestion only.
Keep up the good work!

So you have 50 file sets downloading and they all need passwords, what happens then? You get 50 pop up windows? Your idea would work if you're downloading one or two encrypted files but what it you download a bunch? Then that mechanism falls apart. That's why there's a password file so you can set 50 password in one shot and they all work properly.

In that case you are right. I am a frequent Newsbin user and started using it almost exactly 15 years ago (feb 6, 2003)
All those years I never had such cases though. I have had cases of 1 file, maybe there were occasions of 2 files.
However, I honestly don't remember having 3 or more files being password protected.
That was the background of my 1st post.
But, again, yes, you are right when encountering say 10-plus encrypted files.

I have users that download 24x7. Multiple TB's in a day so, I never make assumptions about how much they use it. Many people use Newsbin with automated download tools that feed the NZB files to Newsbin automatically.

Just in case you weren't aware you can also just click
options > password manager
paste the password
click Add New and OK

actually pretty quick and simple...

Thank you!

No, I didn't realize this (or, should I ever have used it, I forgot about it)
It is a nice option.

Tried it out with 1 file and it worked.

Q: Say there are 2 or 3 passwords there, will NB find the right one?
i.e. will it check the passwords in the list there and see which one fits?

Anyway, thanks again.

Hmm, I assumed you knew about this. Now I understand why you wanted changes.

Newsbin will try each password against the rars. The downside is that you'll want to keep the list trimmed down as time passes or else decode time till get longer and longer.
