Preserving files on a group list I have downloaded

Postby marinewonder » Sun Mar 16, 2025 7:43 pm

I have downloaded all posts for a particular group.

I'm going through the posts to select what I want to download and select one RAR set, it also shows its PAR set, but I only download the RAR set and initial PAR file.

I initiate the PAR scan and it finds damaged files.

Now, I understand or at least learning that files I've downloaded are removed from the list.

But I expected only the RAR set to be removed, the actual files I downloaded and the PAR set I had not yet downloaded to still remain on the list, but everything is deleted and I can no longer find the PAR set to fix my files.

The only way I'm aware of accessing this PAR set again is to download the whole group again.

There has to be an easier way.

FYI, I do not give Newsbin control of PAR recovery, I don't have AutoPAR enabled by choice, if that matters.

That means I want to manually manage my PAR recoveries.

Is there a way to prevent Newbin from removing any of the files from the list and instead leaving them marked as downloaded, or at least not delete non-downloaded PAR files of downloaded RAR sets from the list?

The lack of a true history of downloaded files from a group post list was the main reason I started looking into this, so that I would avoid re-downloading the same files again in the future, as I will need several weeks to go through this group and have no plan to document what I've downloaded otherwise. But as I found out, Newsbin download history is limited by design.

I repeated the process again to really understand how Newsbin is handling these downloads.

I selected a fileset I can easily find by its size sorting in the group, without having to search the list.

I selected the first PAR and the actually just the first RAR of the set.

After downloading, the file on the list changes to the green "read" icon, and it's easily discernible I have downloaded this file.

I then test one scenario that deletes the file from the list: Within the search bar, I search for the filename that matches the filename I just downloaded. It doesn't find it.

I clear the search bar and hit enter to return the view to the list, and now I can't find the file set anymore.

So if my RAR set is corrupt, incompletely downloaded as above, I can't download additional RARs or PARs.

The only way I can avoid this problem is to stay vigilant and ensure my RAR set is complete, and download all necessary PARs while I have the file showing on the list.

When I perform a search within the group, or close and re-open Newsbin and display all posts on this group again, the whole set of files I had downloaded are removed from the list, why is that?

Thanks

What version are you using? In the latest beta RC3 I think and some of the older versions, you just add the rars and pars as a block to the download list. It'll fail the download if 10% of the set is missing.

So say you download a set and it's 430ing out, meaning it's not on the server. Newsbin will automatically abort the download if 10% or more of the posts fail to download.

Anything with less than 10% damage and pars should repair for the most part.

Now for the deletion stuff. In the "Confirmation Windows" select "enable confirmation on delete from download list". Ok or cancel will delete the partial download from disk or not.

At the top where is says "display age" is "Hide Old" selected?
