Just out of curiosity...

I noticed in the titlebar Newsbin that it was using Newsbin.nbi.bak.
After exiting Newsbin, I also noticed that files like
newsbin.nbi.bak
newsbin.nbi.bak.bak
newsbin.nbi.bak.old
were updated.

Newsbin works fine, that is not the issue.

But just curious why the existing newsbin.nbi file seems not to be used(?)

Newsbin makes backup copies of the NBI file which you can see there. At some time in the past, the bak file became the main NBI file.

You can see from the file dates about when this happened.

I'd make copies of all of them. Then rename Newsbin.nbi.bak to "Newsbin.nbi" then double-click it to start Newsbin with this NBI. If it's not the latest they you might want to poke around the copies and look for the latest one and try them.

A totally unimportant detail being that that besides
Newbin.nbi
also Newsbin.nbi.bak is created (which is as expected)
but .. also newsbin.nbi.old.

Anyway, as said, unimportant.

1 - It renames ".bak" to ".old".
2 - It copies ".nbi" to ".bak
3 - It writes out the new NBI.

The reason it works this way is if power was cut or Newsbin killed half way through writing the NBI, you'll end up with a zero length file.

Since I implemented this, the reports of lost NBI's have become far less frequent.
