Version 6.71 Beta 3 Available...

Postby dexter » Thu Jun 09, 2016 4:02 pm

A couple more fixes. Things are stabilizing. Should be ready for production release soon.

Here are the changes:

  • Fix issue when deleting files from the Files list was also deleting from disk. Only shift-delete should delete from disk *and* the list.
  • Fixed the Read Post Body function to show post headers.
  • Changes to the installer to allow override if the installer detects an incompatible operating system.

The download link is on the Newsbin Beta Page. Any questions, comments, or bug reports can be made by replying to this thread or by using the Technical Support Contact Form.

Unfortunately 6.71 Beta 3 appears to be completely broken, when I start it nothing happens. I can see the process in the task manager and if I kill it and then launch it again it'll again show up there with 0% cpu and no window.

Re-installing Beta 2 and it works fine again...

OS: Windows 7 Profession (64-bit).

Installed the latest beta3. Win7Pro 64 bit

Double click on desktop icon and NBPro starts but no GUI. Checked in Task Manager and NBPro was running. Ended process and checked nbi file and it had updated but the nbi.bak and nbi.old files had not updated and were time stamped from the last running of Beta 2. Tried starting NBPro by double clicking nbi file and NBPro started but no GUI again, checked Task Manager and NBPro running - ended process.

Re-installed Beta 2 and NBPro runs fine with GUI appearing - downloads no problems. nbi - nbi.bak and nbi.old files all updated with the same time stamp.

Re-installed Beta 3 and no GUI again. Back to Beta 2 for now.

Edit - no icon on the task bar when Beta 3 is running either

We've had two other reports of something like this through the 6.71 beta process but are unable to recreate it ourselves. Is anyone else experiencing this?

When you install B3, did you allow the installer to launch Newsbin or did you tell it not to? If the installer did launch Newsbin, did it work?

I let the installer launch - the desktop icon - and double clicking the nbi file try to start NBPro and there was no GUI with any of them.

I tried re-naming the nbi.bak file from the last beta2 launch and used that to try the beta3 version but still no GUI.

Quade says he updated sqlite in Beta 3. Could be some database corruption that B2 rides through but B3 chokes on. If you want to troubleshoot, I'd start by moving the downloadsV2.db3 file out of the newsbin data folder (while newsbin is closed) and then try B3 again.

Removed the db3 file to Rubbish Bin - installed Beta3 - no GUI when launching NBPro from installer or desktop icon.

Any other files to try and remove???

It seems unlikely that all three people who have commented so far all hit corrupt db3 file.

But to rule it out, I removed ALL the *.db3 files in the main directory (including the one you indicated) and B3 still hangs, B2 and earlier runs fine. I didn't remove SPOOL_V6, it does have the per-group db3 files but they shouldn't be loaded until much later IIRC.

Any other ideas you want tested?

Locate the guiitems.db3 file. It may be in a folder other than your newsbin data folder. If it is, rename that and see if Newsbin starts. If that's not it, maybe it isn't an sqlite issue. Quade is out and will be back either tonight or tomorrow.

No clue when it changed, but before if i selected say a few picture files, and right clicked and selected Download to Folder Named for Subject, it would pick the subject from the first file and download everything to that one folder, now it downloads everthing to a seperate folder named for each file, any switches i can use to change it back from my end? Fresh install btw, no clue if i had something previously checked to allow that.

Edit: my main download folder is E:\NZB\DL's\$(GROUP)\$(SUBJECT)\ so what i mean is, before if i selected a group of pic files it would download em to E:\NZB\DL's\$(GROUP)\first file name of selected files, now it downloads em all to seperate folders named for each file under the group folder.

It was made into a .nbi setting back in 6.42 - http://help.newsbin.com/index.php/V600- ... t_behavior

Hasn't been tested in a long time so I'm not sure it still works.

installed Beta3 as upgrade to Beta2. launched manually (not via installer), no gui, process stalls with about 6.9MB allocated.
Killed and restarted, same outcome.

Windows 7 Professional (64-bit), Core i5-2400 in a Gigabyte Z68A-D3H-B3 with 16GB RAM. The OS disk is an SSD.

Looks like all three reporters in this thread is still on Windows 7, time to fire up a W7 VM?

To answer an earlier question, I let the installer start NB Pro, no go. Killed it and started it from my normal icon, still no go. And for me GuiItems.db3 is in %LocalAppData%\Newsbin so I can confirm that removing it doesn't help either.

Well I did just that. Seeing that win 7 is the common denominator here. Fired up my base install of win 7 x64 in VMWare, installed Newsbin and it fired up, it activated and all it was suppose to do. It updated all groups with no issues.

Guess we got to look for another common issue these guys are experiencing.

Another common factor I just noticed from other posts is that my C:\ drive is an SSD drive as well

B3 installed and upgraded fine for me over B2! I never launch NB from the installer, only launch the release notes. NB runs fine from its icon.

Win10 x64 LTSB, i7 Haswell, 16GB RAM and installed on an SSD which is a DATA drive but the downloads folder goes to a HDD which again is just a DATA drive! Win10 installed on an SSD, changed win temp folder to be on same HDD as NB downloads folder if that matters!

Someone just reported they were able to resolve their issue by deleting the posterlockout.txt file and clearing out their filters in the filters.db3 database. They had a large number of blocked posters and for some reason B3 was taking a long time processing them on startup.

Could be worth looking at for you guys.

We are up to 6 people reporting this now, out of 800 people running the beta. So it's still a rare and odd issue.

My update went fine. Thought I might have a problem with a large posterlockout.txt, maybe it wasn't as big as I thought. 55KB. SSD program drive with hdd data drive.

How about moving every file out of the data folder, including all the folders EXCEPT the NBI file and then see what happens? Then you can move them back one at a time if that works.

You know, if you make a copy of the Newsbin "Program Files" folder you can have multiple versions installed and switch back and forth.

Program Files\Newsbin 6.70B2\
Program Files\Newsbin 6.70B3\

And then just rename the folders to run one or the other.

Nope, still hangs with a %LocalAppData%\Newsbin that only contains the .NBI...

When it starts up it creates Filters.DB3, GuiItems.db3, Chunks, Images, NzbAutoLoad and Temp before it hangs but it's still really early in the startup phase.

Process Explorer say it used < 0.1 seconds and allocated 7388kB. Virtual Size is 96352kB. It did 120 reads, 561 writes, 2497 "Other" IO. It has 115 handles (123 peak), 28 GDI handles and 3 USER handles, with no network requests currently established.

It shows three/five threads:
  • NewsbinPro64.exe+0x5c13bc, state: Wait:WrKeyedEvent
  • ntdll!RtIDestroyHandleTable+0x270 (one to three of these), state: Wait:WrQueue
  • ntdll.dll!TplsTimerSet+0x8a0, state: Wait:UserRequest

B2 also with just the NBI file starts up a LOT more threads than that (currently listing 71).

Starting up B3 without the NBI also fails, it does exactly the same thing except it also creates the new Newsbin.nbi file.

Hopefully this will give you at least an idea how far it gets to narrow down the scope.

I'll give that a try but my nbi file is not in the data folder it is on a seperate drive D:\ where everything I download with NBPro is put. My reasoning being that if my c:\ drive crashed and was not recoverable, I could start up a new installation of NBPro without having to set up servers and search and subscribe to all the my groups and GOGs - I'm lazy :D

I copied it over to a VM that never had Newsbin running on it, started it and it started fine. It was Win8 though. I guess I need to do the same thing with a Win7 VM though someone else has already done that and confirmed it worked.

The way I re-tested is I deleted:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\DJI Interprises

In Regedit. And

C:\Users\Quade\AppData\Local\Newsbin

From my C drive. This essentially starts Newsbin from scratch.

******************************************
DON'T DELETE this folder IF it's your main data folder. My DATA Folder is on a different drive. This is the default data folder.
******************************************

If you do this, you'll have to re-enter you registration key. To register the NBI file with it again, you should be able to simply double-click your old NBI.

After copying the Newsbin folder in App.data folder and naming it beta2 in a seperate folder, I deleted the key and the newsbin folder and installed beta 3. Tried to run it with the new nbi file and the old nbi file and again had no GUI. Re-installed beta 2, started it with no problems and re-registered NBPro.

Thanks for the effort.

I'm installing the oldest version of Win7 I have on hand here into a VM and will try it. It's seeming more and more that this is a Win7 issue with B3.

B3 was built using a newer version of the devel tools than B2. I'm wondering if it's related to that.

One common denominator seems to be Eset. At least I've seen what seems like a couple reports with people using Eset.

In the install folder. How about deleting the PAR and TBB dll files then see if it starts.

I tested with 32 bit Win7 and had no issues. Now I'm installing 64 bit Win7 and am trying again.

Think you may have something here Quade. Dex stated there are only about 6 users with this issue, worked fine for me under win7 64 in VM. Did not try 32.

Are there some similar background programs that these 6 users have running in background that somehow conflicts with the newer development tools you have used? Would a build using older version of devel tools solve this issue?

If there are only 6 of us having problems, would it help if we pm'd a screenshot to you, of the processes running in Task Manager, on our machines and you could see if there was something common to all of us?

Make that seven with this issue. *sigh* Windows 7 ultimate x64 with all updates but the telemetry ones.

I wouldn't doubt that some antivirus program detected a version change and blocked access, pausing doesn't beat uninstalling the a/v program completely.

Another place to check for issues is Event viewer.
You could also try watching in Process Monitor if you learn how to filter out the irrelevant processes ("Drop Filtered Events" left unchecked will use a lot of RAM).

If it's showing up in the task bar, the gui might also just be off screen but for multi monitor users you're probably familiar with how to get the gui back on the primary screen after changing screen configurations... which is also mentioned here

I've been alternating between beta2 and beta3 to see if I can spot anything different in Task Manager and Event Viewer and the only thing I can see is that when beta3 starts - in Task Manager, NBPro shows as running in the list in the Processes Tab but does not appear in the Applications Tab and of course there is no GUI or Icon on the Taskbar.

Being a purely mechanical person and not a programmer, I read that as the process starting up but being interrupted before the GUI gets a signal to start. This only affecting a few of us, seems to indicate that it is a compatibility problem with NB and something that is common to our PCs probably something to do with the Graphics - video software? even mobile phone software? or something else that involves graphics. Does that make sense???

I consider this to be an accurate assessment. I woke up wondering if the 32 bit version would work on these Win7 64's. I spent yesterday building the repair stuff with VC2015 in case that has something to do with it.

My current plan is to some up with a test version that logs the startup process then let you guys try it.

Hello,

I just updated from 6.71 beta 2 to beta 3 and have the same problem, no gui.
Win 7 Ultimate 64bit with Service Pack 1, 32 GB RAM, Newsbin on an SSD but on Drive G:.
Went back to beta 2 and it runs fine.

All the best,
Calahan

Here's a test version to try. I disabled some things and added some more error messages. This is just a test version though, it resets the display layout each time it's run. If this works, next step is to restore the display layout saving.

I think it might be the new "FreeImage. I'll look into getting rid of that dependencey.

How about re-downloading and re-installing. You have to re-download because this is the full installer.

I was able to remove the dependency on that file. It was the updated version of the FreeImage dll's.

Re-downloaded B4 from the link above and re-installed. I no longer get the VCOMP140.DLL missing error, but I still have the problem of no GUI window showing up.
