Version 6.80 Beta 2 Available...

Postby dexter » Tue May 02, 2017 2:01 pm

Version 6.80 Beta 2 has a couple fixes to issues introduced in Beta 1.

Changes:

  • Fixed Read Post Body function (Ctrl-R) and getting the first chunk first.
  • Fixed problem with Internet Search results for small files. Was losing some data.

The download link is on the Newsbin Beta Page. If you find any issues, please reply to this thread or use our Technical Support Contact Form.

Reposting from Beta 1 because I found a solution that may or may not help:

"Edit3: I was able to find a solution at my end. Moving Newsbin to a BelowNormal task priority (via task manager/details pane) solved the problem with xfeatures on header import. The best way I can describe the problem is that the system freezes as if Newsbin's header import suddenly jumps to realtime task priority, causing everything else in my system to fight for resources. Not sure if you need to look at anything at your end (or if this is just something wrong with my system at a core level), but I thought I would post a solution in case you or anyone else finds this. In the interim, I have created a shortcut that can launch Newsbin at the lower task priority. Best regards."

At the moment, I'm waiting for more reports. I've not been able to reproduce it. I do wonder if this is a security software issue. Changing versions often means needing to reset any security software options you already had set.

This system only has Microsoft Defender on it and the requisite Newsbin folders of Chunks, Import, and Spoolv6 have been excluded as well as the Newsbin executable itself. Is there something else that should be excluded?

This is also happening on the same system under Windows 7x64, so it is certainly possible that this is something low-level and problematic with my hardware. If you're not seeing it at your end, then that is most certainly it.

I'll keep trying to debug the hardware from all sides. Thanks for at least letting me know it's not directly related to Newsbin. :)

Just posting because when I saw "Fixed problem with Internet Search results for small files. Was losing some data." I thought it may have fixed a bug I reported to Dexter last year, but alas not yet. (It doesn't matter anymore. I've gotten everything I need to get.)

But for the record it still misses "the.o.c.sXXeXX" (#DontJudgeMe) due to the small character strings...probably near impossible to fix, but like I said was just curious when I saw the 6.80 changes. (Although re-reading it, it may mean physical size not file name length anyway.)

thanks!

Just an FYI - I am running build 4847 (been installed just about a week) & I've had about 6 CTDs when starting header downloads. Win7x64 gives this error msg -
Code: Select all
Problem signature:
  Problem Event Name:   APPCRASH
  Application Name:   newsbinpro64.exe
  Application Version:   6.6.0.13
  Application Timestamp:   59078e15
  Fault Module Name:   newsbinpro64.exe
  Fault Module Version:   6.6.0.13
  Fault Module Timestamp:   59078e15
  Exception Code:   c0000005
  Exception Offset:   000000000052e16a
  OS Version:   6.1.7601.2.1.0.256.1
  Locale ID:   2057

Exceptions always seem to have same addresses.

Normally simply restarting NB & re-clicking the groups makes it work. Had one occasion when I had to restart twice in a session. Not sure what could be doing it as nothing much else is running
I'm using Comodo CIS security suite. NB is whitelisted.

I have been having issues with incomplete headers from newshosting for several weeks. A day or so ago I enabled header download for my astraweb block account. Whenever headers start to download from astraweb, newsbin crashes. It will continue to crash until I disable astraweb header download.

Just for grins, disable "XFeatures" in the AW server advanced options and see if it still crashes.

That seems to have fixed it. Do I need XFeatures?

It makes header downloads faster but it also makes is more likely your security software will mess with the download connections.

It's sort of a toss up.

Is this XFeatures related as well?

I'm curious myself. It's apparently header download related so I'd try without and see what happens.

I've had this issue for several versions now, thought I'd post about it. Newsbin crashes every time I try to create a NZB file from certain posters. Its easily reproducible, at least on my system. It happens whenever I right-click on a file (of any type and any number), and hit "Create NZB from posts", I get an immediate crash.

One current example: user [email protected] (TMD) postings in alt.binaries.sounds.mp3.complete_cd

I'll try to turn on Verbose logging and see if I can find out any more info for you.

Headers or search engine based?

Header based, and in a Group of Groups.

I'm not a coder by any means, but I did download the Windows Debugging SDK and loaded the NewsbinPro64.exe.8236.dmp file. It says:

(202c.1270): Security check failure or stack buffer overrun - code c0000409 (first/second chance not available)
*** ERROR: Symbol file could not be found. Defaulted to export symbols for NewsbinPro64.exe -
NewsbinPro64!LibContentFilter::CContentFilterEngine::ECF_UNIT_TEST+0x1489f8:

I have no idea whether this is even relevant. But if so, it looks like maybe there's a character in the poster's name that isn't recognized? Maybe??

Oh, and this is Windows 10 (i7, 24GB RAM), saving files to a second internal hard drive on a laptop.

I've also seen two CTD just when starting header downloads on 6.80B2 on Windows 10 64-bit, both times it was pretty much immediately after the download started (perhaps it's a race somewhere around the start). Looks like I'm the third person reporting this.

The older crash was with MS Defender as AV, the second time I had whitelisted both the entire NBP directory and the executable so it really shouldn't be due to AV. The "signature" of the two crashes are different, it's unclear if that's due to chance or because I effectively disabled Defender for it.

Will try disabling XFeatures and see if that helps but it doesn't crash on every header download so it might take some time to find out unless it does crash...

Yeah, I believe there's an issue with header downloads. I'm looking at it.

Thanks for the report.
