[SOLVED] NB 6.4 + wine 1.5.8 = window confusion

While it isn't officially supported, we have many users who successfully run NewsBin under Linux with a Windows emulator (Wine is the most popular). [SOLVED] NB 6.4 + wine 1.5.8 = window confusion

Postby kenr » Sun Jul 15, 2012 8:48 am

For past couple of updates of wine & NB I seem to be having window problems.
The main NB window no longer "contains" the child windows. It used to be that when I moved the NB window the rest would follow but now they stay in place and the "shell" window moves, if I minimize the window they stay on screen.

Now I don't know if this is :-
1. a Mate problem
2. a wine problem
3. a compiz problem

Any ideas or do I start disabling stuff to see what breaks?

- Exit

- Delete the workspace.xml file in Newsbin's data folder

- Restart

See what happens.

Well, rename it, as an experiment. You don't have to delete it.

It did rename it - not a newbie :D

I cant get the search panel to resize at all. I wanted the old layout with the groups at the LHS and the results on the RHS, but all I get is either the whole thing floating about the screen or the groups tabbed with the search and so to open several gog's means a lot of extra clicking. Unless I am missing something?

Leave the search tab alone. That's what the post lists anchor too. If it goes away, you end up with floating windows.

So there is no way of getting a look like the old NB? I had it almost like it beofre my layout got screwed and started staying on screen.
Can I not even resize the search panel at all without making it floating (even then it doesn't like me resizing it)?

I have no idea. It's Wine. I have no idea what's actually works under wine and what doesn't. With Windows, I could get pretty close to a 3 pane look but, that might not be close enough for you.

I have my groups tab set to auto-hide. It pops up when I want to load a group, then goes away and gives me nearly a full screens worth of browsing room. Just "pinning" the groups list makes it look like version 4/5 to me. Just have to leave the search tab in the right pane.

Thats the problem under wine, I cant move the search tab.
I have a 19" widescreen monitor and don't really need the extra 1" or so that the groups take up, I would rather have the them visable all the time so I can open all the gog's I want to monitor and use the search tab to move between them.

Will keep on trying to move it (the search tab).

Ok to see if I could do it under xp, I instlled 6.40b5 in a vm.
Same issue, the search tab is NOT moveable.
I want to move it to the right so I can lock the groups infront of it but I cannot re-size it at all it takes up all the available space and doesn't allow resizing.Image

I've never experienced this, if I get a moment I'll take a look. Inevitably, it ends up being a lock icon or the order you do it in, etc. It's always possible it's a new wine bug. Having GUI oddities in wine comes with the territory.

No one doubts that windows works. That's the supported OS.

I assumed it was a wine issue, but the xp screenshot above shows it isn't.

Don't move the search list, move the groups list to the left till you get some popup icons and drop it on the left hand border. That should give you groups on the far left, search and post lists on the right.

Dragging on to the borders does nothing, and on to the search or downloads just adds an extra tab.

Ahh if I drag it ON TO the icon for the RHS it sticks there.

Got to think outside the box. Dex has a youtube video somewhere showing the process of docking the windows.

Some how I managed to do this just after I started using v6 but this is the first time I have seen the video!

Still don't know how they got all seperated from the main window, but atleast now they are back where they belong. :)
