6.73 has lost groups and servers.

Postby confusednewb » Mon Nov 13, 2017 4:16 pm

top post. Have been running 6.73 steadily and stable - then went to start the app, and got the warning box that Newsbin requires a server. It then opened and had no servers, and none of my saved groups.

How do I make it find them? If I tell it to load from a backup, it loads. But the next time I exit and restart, it's back to no servers, no groups.

Normally Newsbin saves the location of the configuration in the registry. So when you start it finds the filename there.

It sounds like it can't write to the registry.

What changed between it working and not working?

Nothing. No new installs. Don't even think I've had a Win 10 upgrade. Do I have to do a whole new install?

if I tell the program to load backup configuration on restart, that works. so, I guess, where do I put the backup so it can find it on a normal restart?

There IS a default Newsbin folder in your "C:\Users\<Username>\" tree. If Newsbin can't find the NBI from the registry it'll look there.

On my machine it's

C:\Users\Quade\AppData\Local\Newsbin"

Are you sure you're not trying to pass it in on the commandline? If you didn't add the NBI to the shortcut, this probably doesn't apply to you.

I'm sorry. From the beginning, I"ve just installed and ran. You've helped me with what seems like odd behaviour on my end, but I've not done any command lines on startup.

When I start, and it says there is no server (and no groups, besides default that come with the shipped program) - I go to options, and highlight the Start from Backup option.

upon restart, Newsbin presents me with a choice of backups. that choice always includes one from the previous run. so THAT much is getting saved in a place where it can be found.

I don't understand why it can find the backup, but not the nbi.

OK - might have fixed it. after loading the backup, I'm given the choice to save it to another location. I checked that one - it's triple the size of the one in the appdata\local\newsbin folder. so - I just replaced.

No idea how it got corrupted, but I bet that will fix it.

will restart, let you know tomorrow. thanks

That fixed it. Thanks. No idea how the nbi got corrupted in the APPDATA folder, but I renamed the backup to nbi, put it in that folder, and it's fine.

The fundamental problem is the one I mentioned. That the registry isn't getting updated so Newsbin can't find the NBI. The NBI doesn't have to be in the app data folder. That's just the default location. As long as it's working, it's all good though.
