Throttling

I have Xfinity Internet, and with NewsbinPro 6.82, and now 6.90B7, I "used" to get download speed throughput of around 600 Mbps. As of the last few weeks, it's dropped down to just above 200 Mbps. By contrast, using SABnzbd I still get 600Mbps download speed. Leads me to believe Xfinity is throttling nntp traffic.

You're a couple betas back and there was a significant performance increase in B8 or 9. I'd suggest updating first and see what happens. Sab uses NNTP as well.

Made no difference. A Newsbin D/L starts out in the high 400's, act like it will climb upwards, then a few seconds later drops to upper 100's.

So the question is why aren't you getting full bandwidth.

1 - Could be the news server
2 - Could be your ISP.
3 - Could be Newsbin,
4 - Could be your PC.

- What news server are you using?
- When you look down at the status bar where it says "Cache" what numbers are showing? For example I'm seeing "400/400".
- What kind of drives are you downloading to?
- In the performance options, do you have "Pause Download During Unrar" checked?
- How old are the files you're downloading?
- What security software are you using?


I'm sitting here getting a solid 750 Mbps to Usenetserver using Comcast. Using 10 connections. So I know it's possible to get full speed with Newsbin.

SABnzbd works at full speed w/o issue. Gets on the average 80MB/s or 640Mbps.

Using NewsDemon and USENET.farm. No difference between the two. Average with Newsbin of about 15MB/s or 125Mbps.

Using a quad-core i7 with 32GB RAM.

I still believe the issue lies with Xfinity, probably my local node. Newbin worked fine with full speed for months, then about a month ago, the slowdown began.

I've seen security software slow downloads too.

Assuming Sab is using usenet and not torrents, Newsbin should be as fast or faster. It might be the ISP throttling but if that's the case, I'd expect Sab to get throttled too. They're both setup to use SSL?

Yes, both use SSL port 563. I just now tried SSL port 80, no difference. I don't have any security software other than Windows Defender (using Win 10 Pro ver 20H2).

Task Manager shows Windows Defender Antimalware Service Executable jacking up the CPU by 45-50% for total CPU with Newsbin of 83-95%. Could be Windows Defender, but I can't see a way to whitelist a program. CPU is cool, about 60C under load, so no throttling by CPU.

Defender and MS's tools are the only security software that doesn't seem to impact performance. If that's all you're using it shouldn't be a factor.

Are you using a NAS or external storage for any of this?

I actually came here to discuss a throttling problem too.

I run Newsbin on Linux via WINE and can't seem to get over 160Mbit no matter what I do. I didn't notice this before as I only had two 60Mbit DSL lines and ran different Usenet providers over each, thus staying under that limit. But I just upgraded to 5G, also have a 4G backup, so four different ISPs (only using two at a time as I don't fancy paying for four Usenet providers). No combination of them goes above 160Mbit despite 5G hitting 500Mbit on tests, 4G hitting 120Mbit.

Could this be an IO bottleneck within WINE?
Providers are Eweka (300Mbit cap) and Ninja (Unknown cap), CPU is an Intel 8600k, running the latest RC.

I'm not clear on your ISP situation to be honest. I'd expect any cellular data to be throttled at some level.

I found a solution to my throttling problem. I use a SOCKS5 proxy in Newsbin, and now it seems I get full speed. Changing my IP address seems to have bypassed Xfinity's slowdown.

Yeah could be, its Three UK and speeds do vary a lot, I highly suspect they prioritise speedtest sites to get high scores. So long as I know its nothing I can do anything about then that's fine. Downloads already go to one SSD and extract to another as sustained writes bottleneck on the main SSD.

Will see how things change in the next 12 months when hopefully I can get FTTP from an ISP I know doesn't throttle.
